Individual Therapy

Trauma

If you have experienced or witnessed a stressful event that threatened yours or another’s safety and well being, or if you have had to endure many adversities over the course of your life, you may be looking for a safe space to overcome the impact of these events. For young adults ages 18 - 25, I utilize skills from evidenced-based and trauma-informed treatment models the ARC Framework and SMART to help clients strengthen positive attachments, develop positive self regulation strategies and integrate adverse experiences into a cohesive life narrative. For adults 25+ I apply DBT, mindfulness, and the expressive therapies to help clients understand their stories and gain mastery over them (by learning concrete sensory and mindfulness-based coping strategies) in order to live in the present moment again.

Depression & Anxiety

Symptoms of depression and anxiety can stop us from being the people we know we can be. Loss of enjoyment or motivation, isolation, negative changes in habits or routines, or debilitating worries and fears can lead us to miss out on really living. In individual treatment, I employ a combination of DBT, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, and the expressive therapies (art, music, drama, poetry/creative writing) to help my clients manage difficult emotions and thought patterns, improve interpersonal effectiveness, and process and integrate life experiences in order to live effectively and purposefully.

Life Stressors

You likely don’t need me to tell you how ‘unprecedented’ and ‘uncertain’ these times are, but you may be looking for someone to help you manage your thoughts, feelings and habits related to all that’s going on in the world today. If you feel that you have generally had your mental health and wellness in check, but current events have shifted your lifestyle in an unhealthy or distressing direction, individual therapy can help you get back on track (or at least closer to a new healthier normal).

Consultation & Support

Caregivers

Parenting is hard! I have one child (a sassy 7 year old), and caregiving comes with many challenges (and rewards too, of course!) I provide consultation to parents and caregivers around strengthening the attachment bond, managing difficult behaviors, increasing communication, developing emotional regulation strategies (for parent and child/adolescent), and navigating difficult life topics such as loss, adoption, fostering, divorce, or current life events.

Students

Is your child, adolescent, or young adult receiving all they need in the school environment? Do you need help navigating your child’s IEP or 504 process in the school system? Does your child need a school placement to better meet their social/emotional needs (including behavioral management or ASD support)? Are you struggling with your child’s current remote learning situation?

Or are you a college student struggling with remote learning or learning differences?

Whether you are a parent of a child in school, or a student yourself, I can provide support and consultation for navigating your educational hurdles.

Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention to the present moment on purpose and without judgment*. The popular western interpretation of mindfulness includes contemplative practices such as meditation. Improvisation (or improv) is the ability to play spontaneously in the moment. Inspired Improv was born from the idea that you don’t have to be quiet and still to be mindful!

Inspired Improv is an active, high energy group model that fuses the principles of mindfulness and improvisation. Led by Registered Drama Therapist, Second City trained improviser, and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Sarah Carter, Inspired Improv is an immersive interactive group experience where participants practice mindfulness skills and improv together in a safe and fun environment.

Participants will engage in ice breakers, cooperative games and improv exercises as a way to cultivate greater spontaneity, creativity, mental flexibility, and overall wellbeing. Games presented promote increased collaboration, communication and teamwork in the office, classroom, and other team settings. Experience the power of play and embrace your inner improviser through Inspired Improv!

Contact Sarah today to schedule an Inspired Improv Workshop for your office, team, or classroom!
